Teignmouth, Devon – A Place That’s Fabulous
Teignmouth is located in Devon, England on the River Teign. A ferry goes between Teignmouth and Shaldon, the village across the bank. This town expanded with the help of the South Devon Railway in 1846, changing from a fishing port to a stylish resort. It is still a popular seaside destination for many people today. An event of interest might be the Teignmouth Carnival, which occurs the last week of July. Famous people who have visited here include John Keats and even The Beatles. The first mention of Teignmouth was in 1044. A stream separated Teignmouth into east and west portions, both were considered a consequential port in the early part of the 14th century. By the 15th century, the town’s relevance faded and by the 17th century, the main trade was smuggling. The 18th century brought about privateering.
Since the 13th century, the port of Teignmouth endured many hardships but continued to handle clay, timber, and grain as the main shipments. The original quay, built by James Templer in 1792 was attached to the South Devon Railway in 1849. The New Quay was built in 1821-1825 by James’ son, George Templer. Between the 17th to the 19th centuries, shipbuilding was a tradition in Teignmouth.
There were three shipyards until the abatement of the industry early on in the 20th century. The transportation in this town is run by the railway stations and taxi services. When you travel town to town, the best way would be railway stations thats in mid town. The public is open to any tourist guides or bus routes that take them to main tourist attrations.
The original Shaldon Bridge was the longest wooden bridge in England when it was opened on June 8, 1827. Two tollhouses were built, one at each end, but only the one on the Teignmouth side is in existence today.
