Take a Fantastic Seaside Holiday at Woolacombe – Devon
With two and half miles of beautiful sandy beach, gentle waves when the tide is out and waves fit for surfing when the tide comes in, Woolacombe is a perfect getaway.
The area was truly discovered during the World War II when the U. S. Army Assault Training Centre used it as a staging area in readiness for the Invasion of Normandy. There is a small memorial on the grassy headland on the north end of the beach in tribute to those who trained at Woolacombe but lost their lives on the beach of Omaha.
Since then, the town as grown to 1, 000 residents in the off-season but swells to many times that with tourists from across the country. Woolacombe takes care of visitor’s spiritual needs with a beautiful old 1912 Anglican church on the main road. The Village Hall has been used by Calvary Chapel based out of California since 2000. They stage a free Christian music festival called Creation Fest once a year on the beach at Woolacombe.
For those who love the rugged beauty of rocks, water and sand but like to do more than laze on the beach, there is the South West Coast Path which winds through the town and trails along to the North Devon Coast, providing excellent hiking and sight seeing.
There are many hotels, bed and breakfast and tourist apartments open during the summer months. Rail service has been discontinued but there is bus service. The quickest way to approach Woolacombe is by car, although the long, winding road can jam up during the hottest of days in the summer. There are two large parking lots to accommodate beach visitors.
